IE4N BOMI (GI and Install) BOMR (Dismantle and GR) without SERIAL

Overview and Purpose

In SAP PM, transaction IE4N is used to install, dismantle, and move components (materials) linked via a functional or equipment structure. Normally, serial numbers are involved, but you can also perform BOMI (install) and BOMR (dismantle) without serial numbers—provided the material and equipment setup supports it.

This setup is commonly used when managing sub-equipment or spare parts at the component level, without needing serialization.

🧩 Step-by-Step: IE4N with BOMI / BOMR (No Serial)

1. Ensure Material is Non-Serialized

  • Transaction: MM02
  • Go to Plant Data / Storage 2
  • Make sure the Serial Number Profile is blank
➤ This allows usage without serial tracking

2. BOM Setup (Optional, but Recommended)

  • Use CS01 to create a BOM for an Equipment or Material
  • Ensure component materials (child items) are non-serialized

3. Transaction: IE4N – Equipment Installation/Dismantling

  • Choose Function Code:
    • BOMI: For installation and automatic Goods Issue (Movement Type 261)
    • BOMR: For dismantling and automatic Goods Receipt (Movement Type 262)

4. Enter Header Details

  • Equipment Number (Parent)
  • Date
  • Plant and Storage Location (for material movement)
  • Select the line item and choose the appropriate Function Code (BOMI or BOMR)

5. Process Without Serial Number

  • Since the materials are not serialized:
    • System will not prompt for serial entry
    • Directly uses quantity fields for posting GI (for BOMI) or GR (for BOMR)
  • Execute the transaction → Material movement + installation/dismantle happens together

Key Notes

  • Serial numbers not required if materials are not serialized.
  • Batch-managed materials can still be used if needed—batch will be required during posting.
  • Material must exist in the specified storage location with sufficient stock.

🧠 Use Cases

  • Install/dismantle mechanical parts (e.g., non-serialized bearings, filters)
  • Temporary part swaps without tracking individual items
  • Managing high-volume maintenance parts without serialization complexity

Conclusion

You can use IE4N with BOMI and BOMR function codes to handle installation and dismantling of components without using serial numbers, as long as the material master is correctly maintained. This simplifies logistics for non-critical, repeat-use parts and speeds up execution in field operations.
