📌 What is a Strategy Group in SAP PP?

✅ A Strategy Group in the MRP 3 view of the Material Master defines which Planning Strategy (or group of strategies) the system uses when planning that material.

🔍 Where is it used?

  • In SAP Production Planning (PP), the Strategy Group controls how demand is planned:
    • Will you produce Make-to-Stock (MTS)?
    • Will you produce Make-to-Order (MTO)?
    • Do you need variant configuration or planning segments?
  • It connects the material to the Planning Strategy (e.g., 10, 40, 50, 70, etc.) that defines:
    • How PIRs (Planned Independent Requirements) and Sales Orders interact.
    • Whether to hold stock in advance or make everything only after an order.
    • How consumption, ATP checks, and MRP behave.

🏭 Where is it maintained?

Material Master → MRP 3 View → Field: Strategy Group

Example:

  • Strategy Group 40 → Uses Planning Strategy 40 (Planning with Final Assembly)
  • Strategy Group 20 → Uses Planning Strategy 20 (Pure Make-to-Order)

⚙️ How does it work?

  • When you run MRP, SAP uses the Strategy Group to:
    • Look up the Planning Strategy and related Requirements Type.
    • Determine whether to consider PIRs, Sales Orders, or both.
    • Decide how to handle forecast consumption.

Key Tables:

  • T438A → Planning Strategies
  • T438B → Strategy Groups
  • T457 → Requirements Types

Key Takeaway:

✔️ The Strategy Group is the master switch that defines how SAP will plan and produce each material.
✔️ Always choose it based on your business scenario: MTS, MTO, ATO, ETO, or variant configuration.

💡 Pro Tip:
👉 If you don’t assign a Strategy Group, SAP can’t apply the right planning logic — so MRP won’t behave as you expect!
